clientsfromhell: Client: I love the headline but can’t you make it more….punchy. Me: I don’t think it’s going to get more punchy than ‘We Buy Gold’. Client: I want more with less! Me: ‘Sell Gold’ Client: No, I absolutely hate that. The last one was better, just make it punchy. I want it to pop off the…

Maybe I should start thinking about our niches...?...
I am starting to wonder if to be most effective in social media you have to be really niche specific. For example, in stead of another Facebook page for another one of our campuses, maybe the best approach is a Facebook page for a specific major. This could help improve yield and conversion. This was a short post, but I had to get it off my mind.

I Told Them to Come to Jr/Sr Day Because We Have a...
I did some social media promotion for Jr/Sr day. - I created a video:  - I had our EA’s post the video to their profile.  - I asked some students to post the video to their profile.  - I created an image for the EA’s to post on their profiles and tag the students in it who said they were coming. - I made several updates on our main facebook page - We also emailed out the video. ...

Am I Violating Their Privacy?
In a previous post I mentioned how I like to use Kurrently to find mentions of OU on Facebook and Twitter. I really do love using it. Yesterday I found a high school senior who casually tweeted that she was filling out college apps for us and another school. I started following her. I then @replied her and said if she had questions about OU, let me know. I also let our admin rep in her district...

Mashable HQ: Review Roulette: What Mashables... →
mashablehq: Last night we hosted screenings of The Social Network in New York and San Francisco. Film buff Christina Warren wrote a thorough movie review, but we all have our own opinions. Here’s what the rest of us thought: Pete Cashmore - It doesn’t paint Zuckerberg as a bad guy. Rather,…

A Twist on Facebook Events
Recently, I have started using the Facebook Events app on our fan page as a way to encourage interaction on the actual page. This is as opposed to getting our fans to attend an event in person. For example, I really want to start engaging our online students more on our page. So, I created a FB event taking place next Tuesday that asks them to upload photos to our page of where they study. Now, I...

Claiming and Creating Ottawa's Facebook Places...
Wow! All is I can say is that I’m not sure I’m ready for this responsibility. The responsibility of owning our Facebook Places page. There was one thing I did not realize. I heard rumors, but actually seeing it in person…these Places pages are just like Fan pages. They have photo albums, status updates, video apps, notes, discussions, and the kitchen sink that it stole from the...

FB Places Check-In Party= Fail On First Day
I have been totally on top of the Facebook Places launch. Ottawa was not going to miss any opportunity to be up on the latest aspect of Facebook. I was curious to see if anyone would check in at OU. My idea to take advantage of Facebook Places was to host a Virtual Check-In Party. I wanted all our fans and followers who were on campus yesterday and the rest of the week, to take out their phones...

The Difference Between FB Places and Foursquare-...
I have been on Foursquare for about six months. I have been using Facebook Places for a week. Foursquare really proved its worth to me this weekend and it made me realize the current differences between the two services. Every Friday, my hubby and I got out to eat. We choose Houlihan’s this particular evening. I walked in and noticed the “Foursquare Special Here” sticker on the...

Kurrently Is Helping Me Find Ottawa University...
Kurrently  is a real-time search engine for Facebook and Twitter. I found out about it on Social Media Examiner . I have been using for the past couple of weeks to search for mentions on Twitter and Facebook of “Ottawa University.” I am in LOVE!  - It is simple to use - I have been able to find OU students on Twitter that I didn’t know existed and follow them. - I discovered...

Ottawa University and Facebook Places
I officially “checked in” for the first time using Facebook places this morning. I checked in at work- Ottawa University.  So far, as social media specialist for the school, I haven’t jumped on Foursquare as a strategy for us yet. I have been using it personally. Checking in at work to see if others will as well. So, far I am the mayor and only check-in of our traditional campus...

JCrew's Facebook page
I am always impressed with JCrew’s social media/website. If you are a fan, have you ever noticed that (almost) every link they give you on their Facebook page takes you directly to their website? Each link seems to have it’s own landing page. (step one-click the link)  (step two- arrive on this landing page with lots of fun things to click on) (step 3- get click happy all over...

Ottawa's Facebook Fans Want To Be My Friend?
I created a separate Facebook profile in order to manage Ottawa’s Facebook pages. The profile is empty. It only has a picture of me and a quick description telling those who may find it that my main account is at a different location.   Ever since I established our Fan page, the fans have been finding my Ottawa profile and friend requesting me. At first I was turning them down, but now...

The Rise and Fall of the Question of the Week
I have tried many different angles to get comments and likes on Ottawa’s Facebook page.  Sometimes I get so frustrated when I don’t get interaction back that I have to go take a walk around campus and pump myself back up. One of my efforts to increase engagement was the Question of the Week. I did this for two reasons 1. We were in the first few months of our page and needed people to...

Half-Ideas (New Blog Series)
I pride myself on being creative, or at least my attempts to be creative. I respect people and companies who don’t do business as usual and love to inspire creativity in their employees. I HATE boring!! Why be boring- I ask?  Why not take some risks?  I get ideas popping in my head all the time. Things we could do at Ottawa. I love taking things I see that are emotionally moving and unique...

What is Braves TV?
I’m sure you have heard me mention Braves TV in the past. I’m sure you are dying to know what it is, right? Braves TV (BTV) is my student Facebook team whose purpose is to make fun videos for our Facebook fans (and anyone who can access YouTube). It is my first BIG initiative since starting at Ottawa. Their tag line is, what if you gave eight students Flip Cams to create any videos...

Anonymous asked: Wouldn't you say the transition that all organizations are going through with regard to the use of social media parallels the transition that all organizations went through with the adoption of personal computers. Not only did you have initial resistance to changing the status quo but there was much ambiguity about how this new technology could be capitalized on. 'Yes, I like the bells...

Disclaimer: I’ve never been a wedding DJ, so I can’t say this is exactly what they go through. But, seems to be true.  Sometimes, I swear I could cry. My job is to make to almost 2300 people happy. My goal is to get them to comment, or like, or retweet. I spend my days trying to figure out how to make this happen. Sometimes it just WON’T. I have noticed that engagement...

Our Uphill Battle
If you are a social media person just like me, you are often faced with those who simply don’t understand it. It can be exhausting going into battle everyday for the rights of social media. The thing I find most frustrating is those who don’t understand it are leery to trust me. “Don’t post those photos until we know who is in them.” “Are you sure you want to...

Dealing with Negative Comments on Facebook
When I meet someone who doesn’t understand social media or is leery of using it, one of the main things they ALWAYS say to me is “what if someone says something bad?” I am honest and let them know you will probably face some negativity in some form or another, but it probably won’t be the end of the world situation that you fear. Yes, there are some scary examples that we...

The Secret To Getting Comments And Likes On...
We have been able to engage Ottawa’s Facebook fans so much more by simply asking them to give their opinion or asking them to take action. Facebook is a place to connect with people and talk to them. It is not a press release distributor. Our philosophy is, if you sound like one of our commercials, you aren’t doing it right. Since figuring out this “secret” we have...

The Day I Know My Work Here Is Done
My goal is to develop (out of nothing) an innovative and creative social media strategy for Ottawa University. Emphasis on the innovative and creative. The first six months have been challenging, exciting, rewarding, frustrating, stressful, fun, boring at times and… I could go on and on. Since it takes me 50 minutes to get to work, I decided to make the most of out of my time and listen to...

Why I Want Video Essays Allowed for Ottawa
Tufts University has been making headlines all over the world, because it is now giving potential students the option to submit a one minute video in addition to their traditional essays. The result is allowing the admissions reps to see a different side to their potential incoming class and it has also served as an indirect marketing tool for the university. Several thousand potential students...
